Kōrero mō te Tūranga - About the RoleThe Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has an exciting senior tier three leadership opportunity as Director Animal & Plant Health which is part of the Biosecurity New Zealand Leadership Team.

In this role, you will work across animal, plant and marine sectors to reduce the likelihood of harmful organisms entering Aotearoa and negatively impacting Aotearoa's economy, environment, social and cultural values. You will also be the pre-Border Chief Technical Officer for both plants and animals in the terrestrial and marine environments, a statutory appointment under the Biosecurity Act.

You'll play a pivotal role in setting strategy, direction and leading change while ensuring the right systems and people capability are in place to develop and implement science and risk-based regulatory and non-regulatory interventions pre-border. A top priority is to drive the implementation of a new operating model to achieve faster and more efficient delivery of import regulations.

Mōu - About You To be successful, you will need to demonstrate a wide variety of skills and experience including:

  • A strong system-thinker with deep knowledge of Aotearoa's biosecurity regulatory framework, international and domestic animal and plant regulatory environments and associated risks
  • Proven experience as a strategic leader with the ability to drive action now while holding a clear vision for the future
  • Significant experience in developing and managing relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including engagement in international settings
  • Exceptional presentation, communication, influencing and decision-making skills
  • Ability to transform detailed scientific information into user-friendly lay language.

  • most preferably a New Zealand citizen who has resided continuously in New Zealand for at least the last ten (10) years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last ten (10) years: either Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.
