Description
The Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade is responsible for managing the Northern Territory’s biosecurity system and keeping the Territory free from many of the pests and diseases present in other parts of Australia.
As the Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer, you hold a senior leadership role within the livestock biosecurity team, and are responsible for planning and managing a range of livestock biosecurity projects, which maintain and enhance trade and market access of Northern Territory livestock and livestock products.
Your key duties include leading the biosecurity teams in Darwin, Katherine. Tennant Creek and Alice Springs; providing high-level strategic advice to government executives and industry stakeholders and representing the Territory on national working groups and committees. You will also be required to provide leadership in emergency disease and pest animal and plant responses, and act in the role of Chief Veterinary Officer and Chief Inspector of Livestock in their absence.
To be successful you require a relevant tertiary qualification in Veterinary Science, eligibility for registration in the NT and demonstrated experience leading animal health, biosecurity and livestock programs. Strong knowledge of disease surveillance and disease control in livestock and the ability to plan and implement regulatory, research and extension projects is essential. A relevant postgraduate qualification or emergency animal disease response competency is desirable as is experience in the preparation of ministerial briefings and correspondence.
In return, you will receive a competitive salary, 11% superannuation, six weeks’ recreation and three weeks’ personal leave, an additional 3 days paid leave over the Christmas shutdown and up to 17.5% annual leave loading. You will also be eligible for flexible work agreements, career development opportunities and the opportunity to develop a rewarding career within the Northern Territory.
This is a great time to consider moving to the Territory. Reward yourself with an enviable lifestyle and a work life balance that allows you time to explore the Territory’s stunning landscapes and waterfalls, enjoy colourful tropical sunsets and spectacular lightening displays, and experience Darwin’s rich multicultural society.
