Working under the umbrella of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Animal & Plant Health Agency (APHA) is the government agency responsible for keeping the nation safe from animal disease, identifying infections that may impact on people, the environment, and the economy. We also respond to disease outbreaks, conduct scientific research, and support the international trade of animal products and plants – meaning our work is high profile and fascinating.
A rare and exciting senior leadership opportunity has arisen for a Lead Scientist covering our large bovine tuberculosis (bTB) portfolio. The bTB portfolio is an extremely high profile and diverse portfolio of work across scientific disciplines supporting Defra’s goal of bTB-free status for England by 2038 and the devolved administrations bovine bTB policies. The Lead Scientist has oversight of the science strategy for this portfolio of work, leading, managing and coordinating the portfolio to assure that outputs are high quality and address the policy ask. They act as the lead customer contact and are the visible face of the portfolio externally. This is an opportunity for the right individual to build a profile and make a difference addressing a high impact issue for agriculture and the wider economy.
A full job specification and role requirements can be found attached to this vacancy.
Inclusion, support and the development of our people matter to us. We aim to support the career and personal wellbeing of everyone in APHA.
