Description

IPA are seeking an experienced marine husbandry professional to join our team at the National Education Centre for our client. This position provides support to the Curator, leading and managing a team of Aquarists responsible for the production and maintenance of high-quality living aquarium exhibits that support the delivery of key education messages.

As a member of the Technical Operations work program area, the position has responsibility for a range of duties including allocating tasks, managing people and workloads so that both routine animal husbandry tasks and proactive project tasks (e.g. developing new exhibits, improving filtration efficiency, assessing feeding regimes) are performed in a timely manner.

This position is a 7-day a week operation. The team member will be required to work a 5 day rotational roster which will include: weekend, public holidays, on-call and potentially some afterhours activities.

Duties

1. Coordinate Aquarists team input into exhibit maintenance and development processes, ensuring curatorial activities support the Exhibits Plan and Annual Operating Plan, key deliverables.

2. Effectively manage the day-to-day performance of the Aquarist team including core curatorial duties, such as tank maintenance, animal feeds, diving, and on-call, as well as managing training and leave.

3. Using well developed collaborative capabilities coupled with an extensive knowledge of aquatic biology, provide recommendations and direction to deliver improvements to design, construction, operation and maintenance of the aquarium's life support systems.

4. As part of the Aquarist team, communicate and plan effectively to build team capabilities ensuring work schedules

  1. are met, the Curator remains informed of team activities, and liaise and manage internal and external stakeholders.
  2. Under guidance from the Curator and Assistant Director, participate in the installation, repair, testing, maintenance and fault finding for more complex equipment and new projects/exhibits, project specifications, estimates and schedules/plans.

  2. be able to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance, failure to do so will result in termination of employment.
  3. Must hold or be able to obtain a Working with Children Check (QLD Blue Card). Failure to obtain/maintain QLD Blue card will result in termination of employment.

 

Essential requirements (mandatory)

  • have well-developed knowledge, understanding and extensive experience with marine aquarium systems design, operation and technology including strategies for maintenance of water quality parameters, biosecurity and acceptable aquarium industry standards.
  • have a thorough understanding of, and experience with, captive animal husbandry techniques in Public Aquaria and/or aquaculture or research environment.

 

Desirable qualifications or equivalent experience

 

Highly desirable

  • Qualifications and/or relevant experience in Marine Biology or similar field will be highly regarded
  • Experience with coral propagation, marine animal breeding and coral reef ecosystems
  • Experience with workshop tools and fabrication techniques for aquarium related construction
  • Minimum dive qualifications of Dive Master or ADAS Part 1 Diver (or training to AS/NZS 2185.1) or equivalent, and maintain training requirements as per AS/NZS 2299.1:2015 Occupational diving operations - standard operational practice.
