The Opportunity

  • Do you have a PhD in virology, molecular biology, or vaccine development?
  • Contribute to cutting-edge vaccine development
  • Join CSIRO – Australia’s leading scientific research organisation!

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

The CERC Fellow will undertake cutting-edge vaccine development for African swine fever (ASF), a devastating disease of pigs that is currently causing a global pandemic and threatens Australia’s biosecurity.

The successful candidate will join our multidisciplinary ASF research project team, working across science programs and as part of the World Organisation for Animal Health ASF Reference Laboratory at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness in Geelong.

Your duties will include:

  • Designing of innovative methodologies for generating ASF viral deletion mutants and complementary cell lines, using relevant genome engineering tools and techniques.
  • Establishing and characterising prototype master vaccine seed stocks in vitro, with the possibility for in vivo work to assess safety and immunogenicity.
  • Developing a complementary antibody test to differentiate infected and vaccinated animals.
  • Working closely with other CERC Fellows in the Immune Resilience FSP vaccine stream to deliver aligned objectives.
