Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) is a body corporate constituted by the Greyhound Racing Act 2017 charged with providing strategic direction and leadership in the commercial management of greyhound racing in NSW.  Its principal objectives are to exhibit a sense of social responsibility by having regard to the welfare of greyhounds, to promote greyhound racing in the State as a competitive and sustainable industry with a high level of public trust, and to ensure the sustainability and long-term commercial viability of greyhound racing for the benefit of participants, business partners and the community.

Primary purpose of the role:

The Chief Veterinary Officer works closely with the Chief Executive Officer and will be responsible for leading the research, development and implementation of contemporary animal health, safety and welfare strategies and polices for greyhound racing in NSW to ensure animal welfare is integral to the sport and central to how GRNSW exercises its functions and powers.

Based in the heart of Sydney overlooking beautiful harbour views your principle responsibilities will include:

  • Strategic leadership and oversight of track and racing safety in NSW.
  • Strategic leadership, design and oversight of greyhound safety research in NSW.
  • Drive the prioritisation of animal health and welfare considerations including development and leadership of racing greyhound safety and welfare policies, programs and initiatives.
  • Identify and provide expert advice to support GRNSW to effectively respond to systemic and emergent animal welfare issues to deliver improved welfare outcomes and support a sustainable and vibrant industry into the future.
  • Actively foster and maintain effective networks, enhance relationships and advocate on behalf of GRNSW and greyhound racing with key industry stakeholders including government, GWIC, RSPCA NSW, AWL, industry representative bodies, animal welfare advocates and community representatives.
  • Embed effective monitoring, evaluation and reporting processes and systems to continuously evaluate animal safety, health and welfare strategy outcomes, contributing to lessons learnt and the continuous improvement of GRNSW programs.
  • Provide expert advice on animal safety, health, behavioural and welfare issues to the Chief Executive, the Board and Senior Managers.
  • Represent GRNSW as required on committees, working groups, industry and stakeholder forums.

 

Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor of Veterinary Science and/or animal welfare/behaviour tertiary qualifications.
  • Postgraduate tertiary qualifications in a relevant veterinary science or animal welfare field highly desirable.
  • Extensive experience and highly advanced contemporary research and analysis skills.
  • Extensive experience and highly advanced evidence based policy development skills.
  • Extensive experience and highly advanced understanding of contemporary animal welfare practices and application within a racing context.
  • Extensive experience operating in a complex environment at a senior level.
  • Demonstrated leadership, project and program management experience.
  • Advanced project management skills.
