Job description:

Taronga Zoo Sydney is seeking a Veterinary Nurse Trainee to join our animal care team. This is an extremely unique position that provides the opportunity to work with a diverse range of zoo and wildlife species.

 

About the Role…

You will complete the Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing under the 1000 NSW Public Sector Apprentices and Trainees program. You will train to deliver high quality animal husbandry and management practices for the Taronga animal collection and wildlife.

 

Key Accountabilities…

  • Successfully complete the Certificate IV Veterinary Nursing Traineeship under the supervision of Taronga Wildlife Hospital nursing staff.
  • Work under the supervision of others to safely provide high quality animal husbandry and management in line with Taronga policies and procedures.
  • Assist Taronga in meeting WHS and animal care and welfare targets and in complying with all relevant legislation.

 

What you can expect during the Traineeship…

  • Learn to classify animals, identify animal anatomy, body systems and physiological functions across various taxa.
  • Assist with the admission, first aid, triage, treatment or euthanasia, rehabilitation, and release of native wildlife.
  • Assist with medical, dental and surgical nursing procedures.
  • Assist monitoring and maintaining anesthesia, assist managing analgesia, and monitoring recovery in a wide variety of zoo population and wildlife cases.
  • Deliver husbandry and nutritional requirements to animals in hospital and quarantine.
  • Be familiar of drug classifications, procurement processes, prepare and dispense medications for zoo and wildlife patients under direction of a veterinarian.
  • Be prepared and familiar with policies and procedures for animal emergency response for the veterinary team.
  • Comply with Taronga's infection control procedures in all aspects of animal care, identify and respond to biosecurity and infection risks and maintain personal protection.
  • Perform office duties, such as animal record keeping, daily reports, respond to email and phone enquiries and utilise Office 365.
  • Assist in preparing animals and equipment for imaging processes such as X-ray, ultrasound, endoscopy, laparoscopy. Capture, process, and store medical images. Maintain imaging equipment and comply with radiation safety protocols.
  • Assist with monitoring and maintaining animal health and wellbeing, follow animal health preventative practices, recording observations, reporting signs of ill health or injury, administering, and recording animal treatments.
  • Learn to understand behaviour, identify the enrichment needs of animals in care, and provide enrichment to encourage natural behaviour.
  • Give advice to keeping staff; including discharge instructions and treatment plans.
  • Assist with collecting biological samples such as blood, urine, faeces and perform diagnostic testing inhouse and preparing samples for shipping to external laboratories and recording tests.

 

About You…

We are looking for candidates that have:

  • Completed Cert III in Wildlife & Exhibited Animal Care or equivalent (requires interview assessment through TAFE)
  • Hold/ working to/ or eligible to hold a current NSW Drivers License or ability to have existing license formally recognised
  • Obtain and maintain a current paid NSW Working with Children Check (if 18+ years)
  • TB Screening & Vaccinations against Zoonotic disease (in accordance with Taronga's Zoonotic disease vaccination matrix)
  • Working directly with animals declaration form
