A rare opportunity has arisen for a qualified and experienced Exotic Animals Keeper to join our dedicated team at Brooklands Zoo on a permanent full-time basis. By bringing your expertise to NPDC, you will support the delivery of services for the Brooklands Zoo collection and facilities in a keeper capacity.

We are a Welfare Accredited ZAA facility operated by New Plymouth District Council and have future plans for development of our site and therefore require applicants who are keen to be part of this journey of exciting change.

Located in New Plymouth, Taranaki, Brooklands Zoo is a great place to work with lots of passionate people doing incredible things. Our zoo is a free, family focused zoo that is home to a diverse variety of species which attracts both local and international visitors.

To be successful in this role you will be responsible for assisting and supporting the Zoo Coordinator by caring for and maintaining the animal collection within Brooklands Zoo in a manner which meets a high level of performance, statutory obligations and customer expectations:

Key accountabilities and experience includes:

  • a relevant animal husbandry qualification (preferably UNITEC CAM-CWA)
  • a minimum of two years current employment experience at a zoological facility (preferably in an exotic animals keeper role capacity)
  • a good understanding of animal husbandry and welfare requirements, enrichment and positive reinforcement training to ensure the overall health and wellbeing of the zoo's animals
  • an ability to communicate with all types of people with experience in visitor engagement
  • a good level of fitness and working collaboratively with others to enhance and develop team performance while also being confident to work independently
  • an energetic and self-motivated approach to your work including excellent time management skills
  • a strong focus on safety and identifying hazards in the workplace while assisting with site inductions and audits of contractors working onsite
  • a current NZ driver's licence
  • ensuring the maintenance of the zoo is kept up to date while ensuring that legislative requirements and Council policies/procedures are fulfilled
  • providing specialist animal knowledge and headship to students and volunteers.

This role is 40 hours per week with shifts from 8.30am to 5pm. As we are open year-round, you will need to be available to work weekends and public holidays as rostered. You may be requested to work any extra hours necessary to cope with additional work or special circumstances that may, from time to time, arise.

This role is considered a children's worker role and will be subject to safety checking as part of the Children's Act 2014.
