This position will sit within the Harry Butler Institute but will actively engage with academics from across other Colleges and Institutes of the university.

 

The Role

This position will undertake invasive species surveillance and research including invertebrates, vertebrates and plants in terrestrial and marine ecosystems on Barrow Island. The position will provide technical and logistical support for interns, students (undergraduate and graduate), visiting researchers and volunteers. On occasions this may involve pastoral care of graduate students.

Based principally at Murdoch University, the Biosecurity Research Officer will regularly visit (12-15 day cycle) Barrow Island, where the Chevron-operated Gorgon Project is located (60km off the north coast of Western Australia).

 

What you’ll bring to this role

The successful candidate is expected to have experience in vertebrate or invertebrate surveillance techniques and have a passion to protect Australia’s biodiversity. Preference will be given to somebody who has a sound scientific background. Previous experience in either biosecurity or environmental monitoring will be advantageous in this role, with sound data analytical skills, and an innovative mind.

 

Essential 

  • Undergraduate degree in biosecurity or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Willingness and ability to work independently in a remote location for extended periods.
  • Proven ability to plan and undertake research projects (including data analysis and report writing), and to work with students.
  • Ability to work as part of a large interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated understanding and strict adherence to Occupational Health and Safety obligations.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage with external stakeholders (i.e. Chevron, government departments).

 

Desirable 

  • Experience working at remote industry sites.
  • Evidence of academic publications and/or industry reports.
  • Experience in biosecurity working with invertebrates or vertebrates in a terrestrial environment.
