Central West Local Land Services are looking for a Biosecurity Officer to undertake field and regulatory activities which support programs and advisory services for the management of animal biosecurity for the Region, as well as undertake surveillance and investigation activities as they relate to animal and disease control.

About the role

As a Biosecurity Officer, you will be working across the Central West and will:

  • Undertake NLIS compliance inspections of saleyards within the Central West LLS
  • Undertake regulatory compliance work.
  • Complete Council waste depot inspections and swill feeding audits
  • Assist District Veterinarians with animal health investigations as required
  • Provide advice and support to ratepayers, livestock agents and stock owners
  • Assist with operational projects, including animal and plant biosecurity surveillance activities and disease investigations
  • Support new and emerging biosecurity issues, incidents and emergency responses (biosecurity, floods, fire)

About You

These are hands on, practical roles for people who love working with livestock, but will also need the ability to complete regulatory compliance action regularly. Must be willing and prepared to learn.

The role carries responsibility and as such you’ll need to be motivated, honest, reliable and trustworthy - someone who can build strong professional relationships with land holders and businesses.

You’ll need to be able to follow procedures and processes and be able to quickly develop and maintain a working knowledge of the legislative and regulatory requirements related to the role.

An interest in animal health and demonstrated hands on and practical livestock handling skills is a must. An agricultural background as well as an understanding of plant and animal pests and diseases, stock and station agents, and saleyards is ideal.

Ideally you’ll have some or all of the following now, however if not you’ll need to have the ability and willingness to obtain these as part of your employment:

  • The ability to undertake Biosecurity Officer accreditation.
  • The ability to hold and maintain Authorised Control Officer status under the Biosecurity, Local Lands Servies and Public Spaces Act
  • The capacity to hold a NSW firearms licence
  • Current NSW Driver Licence and the ability and willingness to travel (including overnight stays as required)
