The Opportunity
Telethon Kids Institute is one of Australia’s largest medical research facilities committed to improving the health & development of children through excellence in research. Our Bioresources is a state-of-the-art facility which specialises in breeding of congenic, mutant and genetically modified mouse lines used by our researchers.
We now have an opening for a Bioresources Attendant to join this dedicated team and provide excellent quality animals for research whilst ensuring the highest standards in breeding and animal welfare.
The Role
In this busy yet interesting role you will be responsible for a wide range of duties relating to animal breeding, husbandry and welfare.
This position is physically demanding as it involves a range of manual tasks including routine animal husbandry, colony maintenance plus some cleaning and sterilisation of equipment, resources and facilities used in laboratory animal husbandry.
As a Bioresources Attendant, some of your duties will include;
- Animal breeding using aseptic techniques and breeding colony and experimental animal maintenance
- Administer anaesthesia and other techniques
- Operate a range of animal facility equipment including autoclave and cage washer
- Animal identification and logging of incoming animals
- Administration including database management & ordering of goods
- Comply with Australian Code of Practice and TKI policies and standard operating procedures
About You
The ideal applicant will be an effective team player and have previous experience working in an animal facility. You will have knowledge of breeding systems and animal husbandry and understand the importance of the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes.
Along with this the ideal applicant will also be able to demonstrate the following:
- Be a strong team player and work effectively in a small team
- Physical fitness and capability which will allow manual work
- Sound administrative skills and computer literacy
- Be able to work in a fast-paced environment
Conveniently based at Perth Children’s Hospital, this role is full time and offered on a 12-month contract to start with extension available for the right applicant.
