Description

The Behaviour team provide training and support for staff and volunteers across the state, focusing on improved animal outcomes through behaviour assessment and modification, as well as providing education and advice to the wider community.

In addition to supporting the mental wellbeing of animals located across the state’s Animal Care Centres, you will assist the team with the implementation and coordination of a new “In-home Rehabilitation” program to improve animal outcomes by increasing opportunities for behaviour modification and training.

 

In this role, you will: 

  • Coordinate a team of behaviour and training volunteers and foster carers, providing support and training opportunities both in-person and through the creation of resources and SOPs.
  • Promote and demonstrate low-stress animal handling practices and positive reward-based training methods to strengthen the bond between animals and their carers and reduce fear, anxiety and stress wherever possible.
  • Provide support for staff, volunteers and members of the public by providing theoretical and practical learning opportunities.
  • Implement and carry out behaviour management and modification plans for animals both in shelter and in foster care.
  • Teach a prepared training class curriculum to both internal and external clients.
  • Conduct private training sessions and behaviour consultations either in-person or online.

 

To be successful in this role, you will possess:

  • Extensive experience in reward-based training and a passion for animal behaviour;
  • A Certificate IV or above in Animal Training/ Behaviour;
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills and the ability to cope under pressure;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including good conflict resolution skills;
  • Excellent animal handling skills (felines and canines) and a high attention to detail;
  • Ability to work as part of a team and support your colleagues, as well as working independently to solve problems

 

This is a 6 months contract working 40 hours per week. Working hours will be rostered across a 7 day roster and weekend work may be required.
