About the role
Due to continued growth, we are seeking a proactive, resourceful team player with leadership skills to join our company as head of the Bacteriology Department.

This position involves leading a team of people involved in the production of a wide range of bacterial vaccines, as well as taking part in related QA, Regulatory and R&D activities. Previous experience in vaccine production and the animal health industry would be advantageous, however training could be provided for the right candidate.

Key duties

  • Leading a team of technicians and others involved in ongoing bacterial vaccine production.
  • Supervising and monitoring all aspects of production, including: purchase of raw materials; production scheduling; ensuring QA and QC standards are met; ensuring correct storage and use of all raw materials / intermediates / finished products; monitoring all production processes; staff training and mentoring.
  • Looking for efficiency gains in production.
  • Liaising with other departments including Purchasing, Warehouse, QA, R&D and Regulatory.
  • Submitting reports to Management as required.
  • Technology transfer of new processes into the laboratory.
  • Ensuring correct use and maintenance of all laboratory equipment.
  • Liaising with external bodies such as universities and industry bodies with which the company is involved in collaborative projects.
  • Ensuring high standards of compliance are met throughout the operation.
  • Resolving general and complex issues within the laboratory environment.
  • Commitment to continual quality improvement.
  • Participating in regular internal company meetings and forums.
  • Representing the company at scientific and regulatory seminars and conferences.
  • Other duties as may be required from time to time by the company.

 

Skills and experience

  • Tertiary qualification in a Life Science discipline, ideally with a focus on Bacteriology and Molecular Biology, especially that relating to Veterinary Science.
  • Higher level qualifications would be well regarded.
  • Significant practical experience in general Bacteriology.
  • Good broad knowledge of Microbiology.
  • Ability to deal with a wide range of bacterial species with varying growth requirements.
  • Demonstrated superior written, verbal & interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce accurate, high quality documents and reports.
  • Demonstrated capacity for critical and strategic thinking.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Team building and leadership skills.
  • People management and motivational skills.
  • Ability to work independently while following directives.
  • Time management and multi-tasking skills.
  • Good computing and data analysis skills.
  • Project management skills.
  • Ability to think in terms of the commercial significance of the work to the company and its customers.
  • Experience in bacterial vaccine production in the animal health sector is desirable.
