POSITION SUMMARY: ​
Reporting to the Aquarium Veterinarian, this position is responsible for assisting the Veterinarian in the care of the living collection consisting of fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, and invertebrates through a complete health care program with emphasis on preventative medicine. The Associate Veterinarian instills a culture of respect, trust, and accountability within the department and across the Academy. The Associated Veterinarian motivates, develops and enriches staff with the understanding that our people are our most important asset. The work schedule will include weekends, evenings, holidays and responding to emergencies.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS: 

• Provides medical and surgical treatment for sick or injured animals and administers medication to animals.
• Instructs Animal Health Biologists in the administration of medications and treatments.
• Supervises the anesthesia of animals for medical or surgical treatment.
• Performs or directs proper laboratory tests on blood, tissue, and other animal matter in order to determine the presence of bacteria, viruses, parasites, or chemicals.
• Examines animals prior to shipment: performs pre-shipment requests, evaluates findings, and issues health certificates.
• Maintains complete and up to date medical records in accordance with Association of Zoos and Aquariums and Aquarium standards.
• Consults with veterinary staff at local universities and other facilities, attends professional meetings and conferences related to collection animals, writes technical articles for publication or presentation to professional groups, and responds to queries from other veterinarians and facilities.
• Responsible for use, disposal, and record keeping of controlled substances.
• Performs necropsies to establish the causes of death and makes recommendations regarding the living collection.
• Effectively communicates treatment status to the Aquarium staff on a routine basis.
• Effectively communicates with the Animal Health, Husbandry, and Engineering staff.
• Presents programs to the general public.
• Participates in Academy committees and workgroups, and the Steinhart Academy leadership team.
• Conducts general tours of the Aquarium and its support spaces as scheduled.
• Participates in professional organizations and associations.
• Assists with protocol and policy development and record keeping needed for AZA accreditation.
• Acts as departmental manager on duty during weekends, holidays, and evenings.
• Other duties of a similar scope and nature as assigned.
• Follows all Academy and departmental safety procedures.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

EXPERIENCE and/or EDUCATION: 
A qualified candidate will have a combination of the following experience and/or equivalent education:

• California license to practice veterinary medicine.
• DVM, VMD, or foreign equivalents from an AVMA accredited institution.
• USDA accreditation for the issuance of interstate health certificates.
• Has or is eligible to obtain a DEA license.
• Minimum two (2) years professional experience in the practice of veterinary medicine including one year involving the care of animals in a Zoological, Aquarium, or similar facility.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

• Advanced knowledge of animal treatment, disease diagnosis, and associated veterinary procedures.
• Advanced knowledge of husbandry and diet requirements of collection animals.
• Advanced knowledge of standard dissection, necropsy, biological sampling procedures, and record keeping.
• Advanced knowledge of water quality testing methods, parameters, and methods for maintaining them.
• Advanced knowledge of public zoological operation, maintenance, record keeping, and life support systems.
• Advanced knowledge of concepts, principles, and practices of professional museum and zoo registration methods, and collection management standards.
• Advanced knowledge of inventory accession and record-keeping practices.
• Advanced knowledge of zoological nomenclature, zoology, and taxonomy.
• Advanced knowledge of chemistry and biology.
• Advanced knowledge of management best practices and leadership skills.
• Advanced knowledge of computer programs, Google suite, similar workplace applications, and animal record keeping software (e.g. ARKS, ZIMS).
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Excellent organizational and problem solving skills.
• Ability to work as part of a team or collaborate well with colleagues toward mutual goals.
• Ability to work efficiently and communicate with staff, cross-functional teams and external customers from different backgrounds, identities and experiences.

• Ability to collect and collate information from a variety of sources into concise and accurate reports.

• Ability to apply principles of scientific thinking to a wide range of practical problems.
• Holds a valid California driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
• CPR certification or ability to obtain one.
• Must be able to complete all required safety and chemical trainings.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:​

• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to speak effectively before groups or individuals.
• Bilingual (spoken and/or written) in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, or other non-English language preferred.
