SUMMARY:

The Veterinary Biomedical Technology Program is seeking a qualified individual to become a full time faculty member. This is a nine-month appointment (100% time) that will serve in a non-tenure track faculty member position. Opportunities for summer teaching will be available, but are to be determined on student enrollment and need. Additional funding is available for this position to serve as the Attending Veterinarian for IACUC. Primary responsibility will be to carry out all duties as assigned by the Veterinary Biomedical Technology Program Director for advising, teaching and the development and implementation of the new program, as required by accreditation agencies. Duties include teaching, curriculum development, student skill evaluation and team coordination, as well as leading hands on labs and attending additional labs to support for instruction of essential skills to all veterinary biomedical technology students. This faculty member will be required to be an active member of the Veterinary Biomedical Technology Program and College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach a full load, typically 15 credit hours and provide service to the program and department. This may include evening, weekend and online instruction. These classes will be in the Veterinary Biomedical Technology degree program as assigned by the Program Director.
  • Facilitate a work environment that encourages training and improvement as a commitment to excellence.
  • Fulfill administrative requirements for each course including: attendance, Student Learning Outcome (SLO) assessment data, posting grades in a timely manner and outreach to students.
  • Utilize student achievement and learning outcome data to develop program improvement strategies and participate in formal processes of program improvement, such as program review, program assessment, program design and program evaluation.
  • Demonstrate willingness to develop proficiency in all applicable learning methodologies through continuous improvement.
  • Ensure the program consistently adheres to applicable institutional, governmental and accreditation standards. Build networks within the local industry for programmatic support.
  • Engage in activities focused on student service, such as new student orientation, student clubs, student appreciation events, outreach, enrollment and career services events.
  • Work with Research Integrity & Compliance and proper management of animals for use in the program.
  • Aid with ensuring that the program equipment and books adhere to the CVTEA Standard Equipment List and maintain proficiency in use of modern veterinary equipment/instrumentation.
  • Maintain high standards of professionalism and accountability and model positive behaviors for our students.
  • Collaborate, communicate and provide expertise with faculty and staff of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and collaborate with the department of Biological Sciences.
  • Communicate with stakeholders in order to promote the Veterinary Biomedical Technology program.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: Candidate must be a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) from an American Veterinary Medical Association’s Council on Education accredited school.
  • Experience / Knowledge / Skills:Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a clinical veterinary setting with primary duties providing services in a clinical (public or private) setting.

    Candidate must have experience in husbandry, medical and surgical procedures with domestic animals, exotics and food producing animals and equines.

    Willing to be further trained based on the needs of the university within the program area of Veterinary Technology.

    Strong organizational skills, excellent interpersonal skills and excellent self-motivation and self-direction traits.

    Demonstrate excellent mathematical abilities as well as excellent written and oral communication skills.

    Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel.

  • Ability to:Communicate effectively (written and spoken English).

    Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other faculty, staff, students and others as required.

    Multi=task and work cooperatively with faculty, staff and students.

    Work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends as needed.

  • Licensing/Professional Certifications:DVM License to practice  veterinary medicine in Texas or eligible to obtain license.

    Valid driver’s license.

 

PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:

  • One year or more of teaching experience (classroom or clinical).
  • Experience working with both small animals, large animals and laboratory animals.
  • Experience supervising assistants, staff or students.
  • Master’s degree or minimum of 18 graduate hours in a discipline taught in veterinary, animal science or biomedical science or related field.
  • Experience with AVMA accreditation for Licensed Veterinary Technician program.

Program staff and students.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Must be able to work flexible hours to include some nights and weekends due to participation in public relations, outreach, student advisement and other campus activities. Must not be adversely affected by (allergic or sensitive to) formaldehyde, any commonly used veterinary formulations or any commonly encountered domestic species to the extent that such allergy/sensitivity would impair job performance. Must be rabies vaccinated and maintain routine titer checks and obtain booster vaccines as necessary or agree to sign a waiver of liability. Must be able to work outdoors in typical environmental conditions (rain, heat, cold, wind) with appropriate personal protective equipment. Must be able to work in an often busy and noisy environment with appropriate personal protective equipment used as needed. Must be able to work with and restrain a variety of animals, including: dogs, cats, cattle, horses, goats, sheep, pigs, birds, reptiles and lab animals. Must be comfortable working with large groups of people and/or animals. Occasional travel with overnight stays may be necessary. Instruction of required essential skills may involve the use of preserved specimens, radiography equipment, anesthetics, medications, sharp objects and a variety of animal species. The instructor is expected to have the knowledge and skills to safely and properly handle all the above. Must be willing and able to drive a university owned vehicle to off-campus locations and be willing to transport students or other university approved passengers.
