The Opportunity
There is currently an opportunity for a veterinarian that is registered to take on a 12-month contract that have a direct impact on biosecurity policy and animal health. Working to maintain and enhance trade and market access for animals and animal products, you would work to negotiate technical standards and conditions with trading partners to maintain, improve or develop market access for the export of meat, fish, dairy, eggs, animal by-products and non-prescribed goods. The successful candidate will primarily support activities and market access negotiations related to red meat and dairy.
This is an amazing opportunity for vets that would like to move away from clinical work to transfer their skills to policy, regulation and compliance work that still has a direct positive impact to animal health.
The Role
Veterinary Officers fulfil a broad range of duties within the Division. This could include providing veterinary and technical analysis and advice, managing or contributing to the management of complex projects and/or issues relevant to animal health, public health and biosecurity. The role may include supervision and management of other staff and contractors preparing scientific and technical advice.
Typical duties of a Veterinary Officer could include:
- Researching, analysing and interpreting complex scientific information to develop and review policy in line with biosecurity legislation and international standards, and resolve technical market access issues for animals and animal products
- Contributing to projects to improve Australia’s preparedness for and capacity to detect and respond to outbreaks of emerging and emergency animal diseases
- Undertaking biosecurity regulatory functions including exercising delegations under the Biosecurity Act 2015 to grant, refuse, suspend and revoke import permits
- Reviewing and updating of technical work instructions for operational staff within the department undertaking frontline biosecurity related functions
- Preparing changes to the department’s import conditions database (BICON) and other online material
- Displaying sound communication skills, including the ability to effectively liaise with staff at all levels, federal and state authorities, industry representatives and the general public. Ability to prepare accurate, coherent and concise briefing, correspondence and reports on technical animal biosecurity and One Health issues
- Undertaking internal and external auditing activities
The Ideal Person
The successful must possess a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (or registrable equivalent) and must be currently registered, or be willing and able to register, and maintain full registration with, a relevant Australian Veterinary Board during employment in the position. You will have the following skills and experience:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including an ability to communicate complex and/or technical issues to a range of audiences;
- High attention to detail;
- highly motivated and capable of working both independently and as part of a team;
- Strong ability to manage competing priorities within timeframes;
- Tertiary education in a related field (eg. biological sciences, veterinary medicine);
- Must be an Australian citizen;
- Prefer Canberra based with flexible working arrangements possible, but open to discussion for remote candidates
Due to security requirements, the successful candidate must be an Australian Citizen and eligible to pass a national police check
The Salary / Rate
A competitive hourly rate of $65/hr - $75/hr + 11.5% Super will be offered to the preferred candidate, depending on experience. Please note, this rate includes casual leave loading in lieu of sick and annual leave.
