The Animal Welfare Officer supports the Institute in the delivery of excellence in Animal Research by providing expert veterinary and animal welfare support and advice to the Bioresources facility and research community. This role is responsible for overseeing the welfare of animals used in research and ensuring the Institute meets the standards, guidelines and regulations with regards to working with animals for the purpose of medical research in accordance with the NH&MRC Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes.
Some of your duties will include but not be limited to;
- Liaise with the Institute’s Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) and review applications as a member of the pre-submission review team.
- Provide veterinary support for research animals including examination of sick animals, liaising with researchers to enact a treatment plan and providing veterinary advice for in-house breeding animals.
- Provide animal welfare and technical advice, and deliver training to researchers, students and staff in animal procedures/ techniques.
- Oversee the health monitoring of animals and review adverse events.
- Be available on-call in response to animal emergencies to ensure actions are taken to maintain animal welfare standards.
- Write and review operating procedures and reports for the AEC and the Institute, regarding animal health, veterinary matters and relevant aspects of facility management.
About you
Our preferred applicant will have a tertiary qualification in Veterinary Science and current registration as a veterinarian in Western Australia.
The key to your success will also be your demonstrated experience in the following:
- Relevant veterinary experience, and demonstrated experience in veterinary care and welfare of animals in a research environment, particularly laboratory rodents in a scientific institution, is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of the NH&MRC Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific purposes, and the Animal Welfare Act in WA as it relates to use of animals for scientific purposes.
- Demonstrated ability to be organised, set goals, develop priorities, and meet deadlines.
- Solutions focussed and good at problem-solving.
- Demonstrated ability to develop strong internal and external relationships.
