Description

The primary goal of our laboratory is to improve the outcomes of patients with breast cancer. Our research is patient focussed, and we engage patients as partners in this endeavour, through initiatives such as Project SHARE (Specimens Help All Research Efforts), whereby patients are asked to donate their breast cancer and metastatic tissue for research purposes. The breast cancer tissue bank is a major initiative, and used for the establishment of patient-derived tumour xenografts in mice, which are used for the evaluation of novel therapies.

 

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Animal Technician is a support role and the primary functions are to provide routine day-to-day monitoring of animals used in medical research, carry out basic animal procedures and data collection, and to support research staff involved in animal research. This position adds value to the Garvan Institute by providing quality technical animal services. Effective and breakthrough scientific outcomes ultimately result in further funding success for Garvan's ultimate goal of prevention, treatment or cure of breast cancer.

Salary: $58,000 - $62,000 + 10.5% super + salary packaging depending on experience.
Employment Type: 1 year term

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Day-to-day monitoring of animals, which include but are not limited to the following duties:
  • Adhere to Garvan's Animal Ethics Monitoring Standards
  • Monitoring of animals and diligently reporting health or behavioural abnormalities to more senior research staff
  • Routine weighing of mice and recording of body condition score
  • Measuring and recording tumour growth
  • Preparation and performing surgical xenograft procedures
  • Administration of drugs to mice
  • Basic manipulation techniques under supervision of senior trained staff as required, such as injections, bleeding techniques, euthanasia, post mortems, administration of anaesthesia, gavage, minor surgery and drug administration.
  • Availability to participate in shifts and work rosters covering weekends and public holiday

 

ABOUT YOU

  • Relevant qualifications such as TAFE diploma or equivalent in animal technology
  • Strong understanding of the principles of animal welfare
  • Strong commitment to animal welfare and care
  • General experience in handling rodents
  • Basic knowledge of the husbandry, housing and breeding requirements of laboratory animals
  • Basic manipulation skills (i.e. injection technique, euthanasia)
  • Reliable, patient and trustworthy
