Research Office and Life Sciences Research Facility at Curtin
Whether we are developing new mining technologies or exploring the origins of the universe, strong academic and industry partnerships lie at the heart of all our research endeavours.

Our ability to forge collaborations and share knowledge across faculties, campuses and external institutions have enabled us to take a ‘big picture’ approach to research and transform complex problems into innovative solutions that have far-reaching impact.

The Life Sciences Research Facility plays a vital role in facilitating translational research projects across the university. The facility includes highly regulated PC2/BC2, PC3/BC3 laboratories, small animal holdings and a field trial area.

Your new role
This position is a key support role within the Life Sciences Research Facility team.  The position is responsible for the husbandry and the welfare of the animals, while assisting in maintaining the highest standards of compliant laboratory spaces. In addition, this position will provide high quality specialist services and assist in the training of facility staff and researchers in required techniques.

This is a Full-Time Continuing (Permanent), and the successful candidate will ideally commence as soon practicable. As this is a Continuing (Permanent) position, you will require ongoing work rights in Australia. Please note: Relocation and sponsorship support will not be provided for this position.

Responsibilities will include:

  1. Carry out laboratory and marsupial animal husbandry while maintaining quarantine and hygiene to ensure the welfare of the animals and cleanliness of the facility.
  2. Maintain and improve health monitoring programs to uphold the health status of the animal facility and assist with the maintenance of animal usage records.
  3. Assist in training facility staff and research students in required techniques and ensure compliance with all regulatory and university requirements, including Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), Animal Ethics Committee, Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR), and Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF).
  4. Assist in the ordering of supplies and consumables needed by the facility to support operations and research activities.
  5. Commit to undertaking DAFF Approved Arrangement (AA) for Accreditation Training (Class 1 to 8) to ensure adherence to regulatory standards.
  6. Demonstrate the highest standards of professional and personal conduct as a member of the University community, modelling the University’s Values and Signature Behaviours.

We are looking for someone with:

  1. Complete a relevant qualification in the animal technology industry or related fields or possess an equivalent combination of experience and/or education/training in animal handling.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of specific pathogens free (SPF) environments, The Animal Welfare Act 2002 (WA), and “The NHMRC Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes.”
  3. Exhibit effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate teamwork and collaboration.
  4. Show effective time management skills to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines in a dynamic work environment.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to work autonomously as well as effectively within a team, showcasing adaptability and collaboration.
  6. Exhibit computer literacy, particularly in the use of Microsoft Office software, alongside basic knowledge and experience in the care and use of animals in a university setting.

Join us in making a meaningful impact in animal welfare and research—your passion and expertise can help shape the future!
