About the Role

As the Animal Technician, you will have specific responsibility for a designated room within the mouse facility at BRC under supervision by a senior technician and Unit Managers. This will include husbandry, record keeping for the colonies in the rooms in accordance with Victoria legislation, Australian Code of Practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes and PC2 requirements. Once the Animal Technician is trained, they will assist senior technicians in basic genetics, colony management and perform basic experimental techniques under supervision. The Animal Technician has responsibility of keeping their work area clean and tidy in accordance to the facilities guidelines.

 

Typical duties as the Animal Technician include:

  • Animal care and husbandry
  • Performing different sample/ tissue collection techniques (in accordance with AEC approval and guidelines)
  • Communicate with researchers and staff

 

Classifications for this position will range from BQ1 - BQ6 ($29.37 - $34.20 per hour., plus casual loading).

 

Your Contribution

  • Diploma of Animal Technology or equivalent or studying towards this qualification
  • Knowledge of the principles of infection control and application to maintain animal health standards in the animal colony
  • Knowledge and application of Animal ethics legislation and welfare requirements, PC2 principles when working with laboratory animals in research
  • Knowledge of and adherence to Bureau of Animal Welfare, Animal Ethics Committee, AQIS and PC2 requirements
  • Current national criminal history check, or willing to obtain

About Bio Resources Centre

The BioResources Centre (BRC) and the Experimental Medical Surgical Unit (EMSU) are a breeding, holding and experimental facility for genetically modified animals to assist researchers on the St Vincent’s Hospital Campus. The BRC is fitted out with individual ventilated cage systems from Tecniplast in 5 large mouse holding rooms and 5 procedure rooms as well as the usual equipment processing and storage areas. The EMSU facility also caters for larger and small animals. EMSU also has a small quarantine facility with SPF status.
