This is an excellent opportunity to be part of the amazing work we do at our Animal Facility at Parkville as a Laboratory Animal Technician. This will be a fixed-term (24 Months) opportunity. You will be working full time, and be flexible to work weekends and public holidays on a rotating roster basis as required. You will mostly be working at Parkville but may be required to travel to our Facility at Woodend from time to time. Please note that this role is currently transitioning to permanent relocation in Woodend.
It is essential that applicants must have a current drivers’ licence to be able to travel to both facilities. (Note: there is no public transport available to reach the Woodend Facility).
The Role
Reporting to the Senior Operator, you will be joining an experienced, dedicated small team and play an integral part in the breeding, holding, care and husbandry of a variety of laboratory animals. You will be required to carry out day to day operational and administrative tasks. There will be an opportunity to gain further skills required for high-level technical procedures.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Undertake a range of sampling procedures in laboratory animals.
- Monitor the health and welfare of all animals under care and seek appropriate management and veterinary assistance when necessary.
- Assist in the maintenance of facility equipment and infrastructure as required.
- Follow and undertake relevant procedures according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Use appropriate computer programs (MS Office/Tick@lab/SAP) as instructed to correctly record and communicate information, run reports and retrieve data.
- Ensure all records are correctly entered and maintained in a timely manner.
- Participate in internal audits and attend to audit actions as instructed within define timelines
- Assist in ensuring biological products and test results are delivered to the relevant customer in a timely manner
- Assist in responding to customer feedback on product, service and compliance issues
- Undertake training and achieve accreditation in various programs as appropriate
- A variety of other general tasks and contributions as instructed.
Your skills and experience
- Certificate or Diploma qualification in animal technology or other related fields, or an equivalent combination of demonstrated experience (at least 3-5 years) and/or education/training in laboratory animal husbandry.
- Previous experience in a Laboratory Animal Facility or similar highly regarded
- Experience in test and sampling procedures in animals ideal
- Ability to undertake duties to meet scheduled deadlines
- Ability to learn and pick up new processes and procedures quickly and effectively
- Understanding of animal-based quality assurance programs
- Exceptional written and oral communication
- Competent in the use of MS Office programs. SAP or Tick@lab knowledge will be well regarded
- Understanding or knowledge of quality methods and (Good Manufacturing Processes) GMP principles
- Sound knowledge of relevant legislation including:
- Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 Vic and Regulations 1997
- Regulatory bodies: Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) & Department of Agriculture, Water & Environment (DAWE), Therapeutic Goods Association (TGA)
- Industry Standards: Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes (8th Edition), Code of Practice for the Housing & Care of Laboratory Mice, Rats, Guinea Pigs and Rabbits (2004)
- Note: It is an inherent requirement of this position to be vaccinated against COVID, Q Fever, Influenza and Tetanus, and not have allergies that would preclude you from performing critical animal facility duties. Proof of vaccination will be required, or vaccinations will be provided by Seqirus if successful for the position.
