Description

The Australian BioResources Facility, owned and operated by the Garvan, breeds high-quality laboratory mice for Garvan’s medical research programmes. This facility, based in Moss Vale in the Southern Highlands, uses advanced technology to provide an optimal environment for the production of high-quality animals for medical research.

 

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are currently seeking two reliable Animal Technicians for the Australian BioResources Facility. The principle responsibilities of this position involve the breeding, maintenance and care of inbred and genetically manipulated mouse colonies within a cleanroom environment.

 

Salary: $54,000 + 10.5% superannuation + salary packaging

Employment Type: Full time permanent

WHAT YOU WILL DO

The key responsibilities include management of animal husbandry within a delegated area, duties include but are not limited to:

  • Adhere to Garvan’s Animal Ethics Monitoring Standards
  • Monitoring of animals and diligently reporting health or behavioural abnormalities to more senior research staff
  • Routine weighing of mice and recording of body condition score
  • Measuring and recording tumour growth
  • Preparation and performing surgical xenograft procedures
  • Administration of drugs to mice
  • Basic manipulation techniques under supervision of senior trained staff as required, such as injections, bleeding techniques, euthanasia, post mortems, administration of anaesthesia, gavage, minor surgery and drug administration.
  • Laboratory responsibilities: participation in routine laboratory maintenance rosters and sample management
  • Administrative responsibilities: data entry
  • Actively communicate with and support research group staff members in a positive and helpful manner in order to maintain the welfare and ethical monitoring standards of animals
  • Maintain up-to-date skills and knowledge of ethical, monitoring policies, protocols and checklists
  • Strictly maintain confidentially and protection of Garvan’s research and operational procedures
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training
  • Attend and proactively participate in team meetings
  • Availability to participate in shifts and work rosters covering weekends and public holiday

 

ABOUT YOU

  • Relevant qualifications such as TAFE diploma or equivalent in animal technology
  • Must have own transportation (facility is not located near public transport)
  • Strong understanding of the principles of animal welfare
  • Strong commitment to animal welfare and care
  • General experience in handling rodents
  • Basic knowledge of the husbandry, housing and breeding requirements of laboratory animals
  • Basic manipulation skills (i.e. injection technique, euthanasia) or ability to learn
  • Excellent attention to detail and observational skills
  • Strong customer focus and commitment to quality
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Reliable, patient and trustworthy with a professional and caring approach
  • The ability to work individually or as a member of a team
  • Ability to organise own time – able to schedule tasks using a work diary
  • Ability and motivation to develop new skills and learn new procedures
