Why Your Role Matters:

As an Animal Technician you will be responsible for providing technical expertise to all pre-clinical aspects of the Surgical and Orthopaedic Laboratory (SORL). This includes the daily provision of animal husbandry, monitoring, animal care, and supporting the conduct of the SORL surgical program.

In addition, as an Animal Technician, you will interact closely with the chief and principal investigators of SORL and liaise with BRC personnel regarding animal husbandry, pre- and post-operative monitoring/ care and any animal-related issues which may arise. You will demonstrate a working knowledge of the NSW and Australian regulatory framework governing the use of animals for scientific research and adhere to other regulatory requirements pertinent to animal research, including those relating to OECD GLP, AQIS and control of restricted drugs.

The Animal Technician will also support the conduct of pre-clinical operations and monitoring of research animals in accordance with the requirements of the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes and the Animal Research Act.

The role reports to the Senior Animal Technician and has no direct reports

 

Who You Are:

• A Degree, Associate Diploma, TAFE Certificate or equivalent in Animal Studies or Animal Technology or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and/or experience.
• Demonstrated experience and current skill set in the preparation, induction, and anaesthesia of laboratory and domestic animals for a variety of surgical procedures.
• Demonstrate relevant experience in the post-operative care, monitoring, and recovery of large domestic and small laboratory animals and familiarity with current humane euthanasia methods for large domestic and small laboratory animals.
• Ability to prioritise and organise daily workloads with a minimum of supervision.
• A working understanding of animal ethics processes and the regulatory framework governing the use of animals for scientific purposes.
• Demonstrated ability to be resourceful and adapt existing procedures to achieve productive outcomes across multiple surgical & animal holding facilities within UNSW and beyond.
• Genuine commitment to the ethical care and welfare of animals enrolled in the laboratory research protocols.
• An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’S aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
• Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
