About Melbourne Bioresources in Business Services
Melbourne Bioresources is a newly created university wide platform that brings together all the small animal facilities on campus and combines the resources and expertise of many skilled staff. The aim is to offer a high standard of service to UoM researchers combined with best practice in animal care and welfare. In this role, you may work across a number of different animal facilities, training and expectations will be appropriate to your level of experience. There may be an opportunity to work with a variety of species in a number of different settings.

 

About the Role
As Animal Technician, you will be responsible for the basic husbandry and day-to-day care of research animals at the University. Applying a high standard of care and attention to detail, you will provide researchers with the numbers and genetic type of animals required by implementing various breeding strategies and common manipulative techniques.

In a typical week at work, you may:

  • Undertake close observation of animals under your care to detect changes in appearance or behaviour which must be communicated in a timely manner to researchers and veterinarians
  • Monitor the environmental conditions of the animal room in accordance with set parameters
  • Maintain appropriate records as required. This will involve the use of the animal facility management database

Please note, this is a fixed-term opportunity available for 12 months.

 

About You
To be successful in this role, you must possess empathy and have a genuine desire to work with animals within a research setting. Your experience in animal care and associated techniques allows you to work confidently, while employing the high standard of care, responsibility and understanding required for this role. You enjoy working as part of a team and demonstrate accountability and reliability in your work, taking direction where required.

Ideally, you will further have:

  • A Diploma of Applied Science, Animal Technology and have at least four years’ experience relevant to the field
  • Experience performing basic manipulative techniques used in a research setting including a range of methods of substance delivery and sample collection
  • An understanding of the practical implications of the rules and regulations of the codes and practices relating to animal research in Australia is required
