Description
A unique opportunity to support the Core Animal Services team has become available at the Florey Institute as an Animal Technician. The Core Animal Services Team are a supportive and highly respected team that play an integral part in the operation of the Florey Institute.
This is a trainee position playing a key role in the operation of Core Animal Services which supports the Institute research groups’ needs on a daily basis.
The candidate will be responsible for:
- All aspects of rodent husbandry related to the Bioresources facilities
- Animal welfare and regulatory compliance
- Maintenance of animal management records
- Working and communicating effectively with the Core Animal Services Team
- Liaising with researchers to help meet experimental requirements
This role can only be performed onsite at our Parkville facilities. Weekend and public holiday work may be required on a rotating roster.

This position is permanent, full time 1.0 FTE. This role is paid in the range of Higher Education Worker Level 3-1 ($54,487) to Higher Education Worker 3-6 ($60,158), dependent upon experience.

About you:
The successful candidate will have:
- Completed or currently undertaking relevant course in animal care, Diploma of Animal technology or equivalent
- Basic animal husbandry skills, some understanding of the maintenance and breeding of transgenic mouse colonies
- Knowledge of relevant animal welfare and regulatory guidelines
- Good communication, writing and organisational skills
- Ability to work as part of a team and independently with minimal supervision as required
- Ability to work in close proximity to animals and animal material in an enclosed space for most of the working day is essential
- Good time management and organisational skills
Experience in the following is desirable:
- Understanding of mendelian genetics, ability to perform transgenic mouse breeding requests
- Able to perform identification and tissue sampling techniques
- Experience working in a high SPF environment with a thorough understanding of IVC technology
- Experience in physical methods of euthanasia
