About the role:

A unique opportunity to support the Core Animal Services team has become available at the Florey Institute as an Animal Technician.  The Core Animal Services Team are a supportive and highly respected team that play an integral part in the operation of the Florey Institute.

This is an introductory role involving training to competency on all aspects of animal management, transgenic mouse breeding, adherence to ethical guidelines and direct involvement in delivering successful research outcomes.

The candidate will be responsible for:

  • All aspects of animal husbandry related to the Bioresources facilities
  • Animal welfare and regulatory compliance
  • Maintenance of animal management records
  • Working and communicating effectively with the Core Animal Services Team
  • Liaising with researchers to help meet experimental requirements
  • Assisting with support to cover staff absence including the rodent breeding and housing areas and washroom facility as required

This role can only be performed onsite at our Parkville and Heidelberg facilities.  Weekend and public holiday work may be required on a rotating roster.

This position is fixed-term full time (1.0 FTE) until 4 November 2022. This role is classified at a rate of Higher Education Worker Level 3-1 (HEW 3-1) and attracts a salary offer of $52,941 per annum.

About you:

The successful candidate will have:

  • Ability to work in close proximity to animals and animal material in an enclosed space for most of the working day is essential
  • Basic animal husbandry skills
  • A basic understanding of Specific Pathogen Free environments and welfare requirements is essential
  • Previous relevant experience such as animal care courses, experience in a Bio-resources facility, animal welfare and regulatory guidelines are desirable
  • Good communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills
  • Excellent writing, record-keeping and data management skills
  • Good time management and organisational skills
  • Attentive to detail and good observational skills
  • Ability to take initiative and be proactive in identifying and solving problems
  • Ability to understand and follow procedures and protocols
