About the role:
A unique opportunity to support the Core Animal Services team has become available at the Florey Institute. The Core Animal Services Team are a supportive and highly respected team that plays an integral part in the operations of the Florey Institute.
Key Responsibilities include:
- All aspects of animal management performed by Core Animal Services
- The management of transgenic mouse breeding
- Ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare and regulatory compliance
- Delivering successful research outcomes and adherence to ethical guidelines
- Coordinating coverage for staff leave
- As Core Animal Services operates 7 days per week, it is expected that you will contribute to overtime work on weekends and public holidays as required on a rotating roster
This role can only be performed onsite at our Parkville facilities. This role is full-time, fixed-term until 3 February 2023 (maternity leave cover) and paid in the range of Higher Education Worker 4-1 ($61,198) to Higher Education Worker 4-4 ($64,947), dependent upon experience.

About you:
You are an experienced Animal Technician who will be able to maintain their own mouse colonies and work in all environments of the CAS platform, from our highest SPF breeding facility to experimental holding rooms and washroom facilities
Experience in the following is essential:
- Completed studies in animal care (eg. Diploma of Animal technology or equivalent)
- Advanced skills in rodent husbandry, including thorough understanding of IVC technology and working within an SPF environment
- Knowledge of relevant animal welfare and regulatory guidelines
- Good communication, writing and organisational skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team and independently with minimal supervision
- Previous experience working within a bio-resources facility, in particular the ability to plan and execute cohort breeding with a thorough understanding of transgenic breeding strategies
