Description

Animal Technician

  • Full time, ongoing position
  • Based in Cambridge but may be required to support the facility in Hobart CBD
  • Provides professional technical services for laboratory animal care

The University of Tasmania’s Department of Animal Services provides professional technical services for laboratory animal care in addition to research project support for faculty, students and employees of the University of Tasmania.

 

The Opportunity

Work within a team of experienced technicians and be responsible for providing animal care and welfare deployed in a range of services that the department of Animal Services provides to clients within various biomedical research departments throughout the University.

 

Key Accountabilities:

  • Daily monitoring related to the care, health, and welfare of laboratory rodents.
  • Routine husbandry tasks including handling, cleaning, feeding, and watering of laboratory rodents.
  • Adhering to the requirements of research and animal ethics projects, timelines, and standard operating procedures.
  • General cleaning and maintenance of animal facility.
  • Maintain the fabric, fittings, equipment and instrumentation in good order, reporting any issues to the team leader.
  • Ensuring Work Health and Safety requirements are followed at all times.

 

Your Application

To be successful in the role, your application will need to demonstrate;

  • Relevant experience working in a laboratory rodent PC1/PC2 facility, with a knowledge of the NHMRC Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes 8th edition (2013) and accompanying guidance notes, recommendations, and codes of practice.
  • Ability to follow established methodologies and techniques with a high level of attention to detail and the proven capacity to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • An understanding and application of rodent husbandry skills with critical attention to detail.
  • Possession of a caring attitude and genuine interest in working with rodents.

 

Remuneration

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 3 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $73,911 comprising base salary within the range of $57,024 to $63,172 plus 17% superannuation.
