The position will involve conducting post-weaning pig feeding experiment(s) using algal-based feed ingredients where growth, feed intake, health interventions, diarrhoea scoring etc. are recorded.  A subsample of pigs will be sacrificed for collection of blood, intestinal tissue and digesta.  These samples will be used by the successful candidate for intestinal histology, gene expression, blood haematology, blood biochemistry and next-generation microbiota analysis. Background:

As part of a European consortium, Teagasc was awarded funding by Horizon Europe in the HORIZON-CL6-2021-CIRCBIO-01-09: Unlocking the potential of algae for a thriving European blue bioeconomy call.  Arising from this, the current position has become available on the CIRCALGAE project. The purpose of the project is to add value to the waste streams from macro-and micro-algae processing. Less than 30-40% of the raw macroalgae and 5-30% of microalgae currently being harvested is utilised, with the remainder being waste streams of processing.  The objective of the project is to obtain high-value ingredients from these underutilised waste streams. Ingredients for cosmetic products, food and animal feed will be produced and evaluated during the project.  The role of Teagasc is to evaluate the feeding value and health benefits in pigs of 2-3 suitable ingredients from the algal waste streams, at different dietary inclusion levels.
