The new strategy is designed to galvanise Garvan's researchers, professional staff, partners, donors and community around our vision of Global leadership in discoveries to impact, and to enable us to deliver on that vision - such that Garvan becomes an institute where research discoveries are taken through to patient impact (new treatments, tests and prevention approaches), on a global scale.
The purpose of the Research and Development Office is to support high quality research and researchers by:
- Supporting researchers to meet their obligations with respect to ethics, integrity, project management, supervision and reporting.
- Supporting researchers to develop their skills and knowledge in areas of Research and Development Office expertise.
- Supporting researchers to develop high quality research funding proposals.
- Developing, analysing and reporting high quality research management data to support the strategic development of Garvan's research profile.
The Opportunity
The Animal Research Ethics Officer provides administrative and clerical support to the Research Ethics, Governance and integrity team and to the Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) as well as fulfilling internal and external audit responsibilities, drug procurement and management of the Online Ethics Platform.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but not limited to:
- Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) support including coordination of submission of documentation for meetings, minutes and the preparation and processing of outgoing correspondence, venue management and arranging payment of committee members
- Maintain hardcopy and electronic records relating to animal research at Garvan facilities, including compliance records, Animal Research Authorities (ARAs), SOPs, audit reports, inspection reports and other documents as required.
- Assisting researchers with administrative queries concerning AEC procedures.
- Refinement/development of AEC and Stuart self-generated database notices and correspondence.
- Updating and maintaining relevant templates, intranet pages, on-line calendar, AEC manual and training presentations.
- Maintenance of the AEC Project Index including personnel updates, project extensions, final reports and identifying onsite breeding, S8 drug use and project expiry dates. Participating in AEC inspection of animal facilities and preparation of inspection reports.
- Administrative functions including event, room and resource bookings, travel and conference registration and managing office supplies
- Maintenance of animal ethics data including statistics, phenotype trends and adverse incidents for annual reporting and accreditation.
- Developing and maintaining online systems to apply for and manage animal research ethics applications such as management of Online Ethics Platform including collection of all documents submitted, advice to researchers, technical troubleshooting and responding to the forum for researchers.
- Development and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in collaboration with the Research Compliance Officer and Researchers as well as maintaining a registry for AEC and facility SOPs for review and referral.
- Procurement of drugs for external researchers and invoicing of all drug orders. Assisting in the forwarding of drug authority applications and assisting in drug audits when required by the Compliance officer.
- All staff are required to comply with Garvan's workplace polices (as amended from time to time) and especially Garvan's Work Health & Safety (WHS) Policy, including working in accordance with the WHS management system at all times, as safety is Garvan's number one priority.

- This is a permanent full time position with a salary paying up to $70,000 + 10% superannuation
- Generous salary packaging ($15,900 for general household expenses and $2,650 for meal/entertainment allowance on top of base salary) This takes the total package to $86,450 + 10% superannuation

About You
To be considered for this role you must have:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
- Excellent computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (i.e. Word, PowerPoint and Excel) and (preferably) some experience in website maintenance
- Experience in committee support
- Good communication and organisational skills
- Basic knowledge of scientific/medical terminology
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, solve problems and work independently
- Strong commitment to quality and excellent attention to detail
- understanding of and commitment to:
- Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research and
- Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes
