Expression of Interest from Community Members and those persons committed to furthering the welfare of animals for a 3-year fixed term position.

Curtin’s Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) is a University Committee responsible for the use of animals for scientific purposes at all Curtin facilities.
The primary responsibility of the AEC is to ensure, on behalf of the University, that all activities relating to the care and use of animals is conducted in compliance with the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes - 2013 (the Code).
The Position/s:
We are currently seeking people with a demonstrable commitment to and established experience in furthering the welfare of animals:
- To meet the criteria of a Category C member, you will not be employed or otherwise associated with Curtin University. While not representing an animal welfare organisation, active membership, and endorsement by such an organisation will be viewed favourably (Category C).
- To meet the criteria of a Category D member, you will be a community member who brings a completely independent view to the AEC, who is not employed by or otherwise associated with Curtin University and who has never been involved in the use of animals in scientific or teaching activities (Category D).
Your Responsibilities:
- To provide competent and independent review of applications for projects, proposed amendments to projects and reports related to the care and use of animals and approve only those projects, amendments and reports that are ethically acceptable and conform to the requirements of the Code.
- On occasion, you may be required to act as a member of the Executive Committee to review submissions for projects not requiring full AEC review for approval out of session.
Meetings:
Meetings are held 9 times a year on the Curtin Bentley campus. Although it is preferred that you attend in person, Teams attendance can be arranged.
Support provided:
A $300 sitting fee is paid for each meeting. Remuneration is paid on a per meeting basis which includes meeting preparation.
Reserved parking will be provided on meeting days and covered by the University.
Curtin will provide a full induction to the functions of the committee, systems training and ongoing support.
