Description

Under general supervision, is responsible for performing Euthanasia By Injection (EBI) and providing customer service over the phone and in person to residents inquiring about Animal Care Services. Working conditions are inside and outside with frequent exposure to temperature variations, hazardous chemicals, noise, dirty environment, confining workspace, and unfavorable odors. Exercises functional supervision over assigned staff.

Work Hours
Shifts are generally:
9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., Monday - Friday
7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday
Hours will vary to include but not limited to: 40+ hours a week with consecutive days off (unless notified in advance), weekends, early morning, late evenings, holidays. Schedule may rotate or change.

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs euthanasia of animals identified by veterinarians, management, supervisors with understanding and compassion and disposes of animal remains in a respectful manner.
  • Removes heads of animals to be submitted to the laboratory and prepares necessary paperwork on animals suspected of having rabies.
  • Counsels owners who wish to surrender pets on alternative solutions to surrendering pet.
  • Advises and responds to complex customer inquiries regarding services, ordinances, laws and procedures related to sheltered animals and general animal welfare.
  • Safely and humanely handles and houses animals; occasionally assists with lifting animals weighing over 50 pounds.
  • Provides customer service in person and over the phone to citizens
    inquiring about the services provided by Animal Care Services.
  • Ensures the safety of animals and people at the shelter.
  • Assists in unloading trucks, stocking shelter, and storing materials.
  • Ensures animals are fed, watered, and cared for in the kennel.
  • Cleans and sanitizes kennel area, equipment, and outside areas of grounds.
  • Maintains accurate inventory of animals, equipment, and supplies.
  • May perform routine administrative duties.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

 

Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or a GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency.
  • Two (2) years of animal handling experience.
  • One (1) year of experience as a team lead.
  • Successful completion of Texas Department of State Health Services approved course in Euthanasia by Injection within 120 days of employment and must maintain certification.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License, or a valid driver's license from another state with the ability to obtain a valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Use of your own personal vehicle may at times be required and proof of Liability Insurance will be required.
  • One (1) year of animal handling experience in a professional environment.
  • One (1) year of customer service experience in a professional environment.
  • Current Euthanasia By Injection (EBI) certification.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, additional background checks may be conducted.

  • Knowledge of safe and humane handling, housing and care of animals.
  • Knowledge of basic veterinarian technician skills; ability to learn how to administer vaccines and medication.
  • Skill in handling conflict and uncertain situations.
  • Skill in observation and classification of animals.
  • Ability to quickly recognize and interpret animal signaling.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relations with the public and other employees.
  • Ability interpret laws and regulations pertaining to animal control.
  • Ability to recognize symptoms of common animal diseases; ability to handle cats and dogs (including large breeds).
  • Ability to prepare and organize statistical records.
  • Ability to learn procedures related to sanitizing kennels, and general safe and humane animal handling.
  • Ability to learn animal anatomy and basic surgical techniques.
  • Ability to clearly explain animal services policies to the public, and to exercise tact and good judgment in dealing with the public.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
  • Ability to coach, train and provide technical assistance to others.
  • Ability to perform animal behavior assessment.
  • Ability to perform all physical requirement of the position, with or without accommodations.
