Position Title: Animal Technician, Cancer Research Division

Employment Status: Permanent Full-time (two positions available)

Department: Animal Facility

Location: Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre, Parkville, Melbourne

Hours: 80 hours per fortnight

 

YOUR ROLE IN OUR FUTURE

Our Cancer Research Division is currently seeking a full time Animal Technician to join our multi-disciplinary and dynamic Animal Facility Core. The position is a permanent full-time contract, which will also require the successful candidate to participate in weekend and public holiday rosters.

The principle responsibilities of this position are animal husbandry, colony management and record keeping. The position works closely with other animal technicians as well as research staff and students. You will support the team leader and manager on issues of compliance, animal welfare and assist with the daily activities and maintenance of the facility.

The successful applicant will need to possess and demonstrate the following skills and attributes:

  • Commitment to ethical treatment of animals
  • Good communication, organisation, and teamwork skills
  • High level of reliability

The successful candidate will have a basic understanding of compliance regulations including POCTA Act, AQIS, PC2 & OGTR and Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes.
It is desirable for the successful candidate to have completed a Diploma of Applied Science – Animal Technology or equivalent, and experience in colony management, including genetically modified animals.

Position Summary

To provide high quality animal welfare and husbandry to mouse breeding or experimental colonies.
To support the Managers and Team Leaders on issues of compliance, staff planning, animal welfare, and to assist with the daily operations of the Animal Breed.

Key Effectiveness Areas:

  1. Responsible for the daily husbandry, health monitoring and records of mouse colonies in an efficient manner under supervision.
  2. To provide and ensure high quality animal husbandry and to maintain high animal ethical standards.
  3. Assist with injection and collection techniques under supervision in accordance with SOP’s, AEEC approval and guidelines.
  4. Ensure compliance with all relevant safety, biohazard and animal welfare rules and regulations.
  5. To maintain a high level of hygiene and tidiness within facility.
  6. Effective communication and liaison with laboratory staff and team members.

Selection Criteria:

Essential:

  • Extensive animal husbandry experience
  • Experience in working at a high level of responsibility in an Animal Facility
  • Extensive knowledge of mouse breeding regimes
  • Knowledge of PC2 containment requirements
  • Diploma of Applied Science (or currently undertaking)– Animal Technology or higher

Desirable:

  • Experience in the use of colony management databases
