Description

Position Overview

The School of Veterinary Sciences at Massey University, Palmerston North, invites applications for a position in veterinary diagnostic imaging as a Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor. Our AVMA-accredited veterinary programme is world-renowned providing quality, research-led education. This is a key academic post for a candidate who wishes to establish or maintain an academic career as a member of a dynamic diagnostic imaging team.

The University is situated in Palmerston North, a provincial university city of approximately 88,000 people centrally located in the north island of New Zealand.  Our region is eminently bikeable for work, and family-friendly with easy access to outdoor activities such as fishing, skiing, hiking, equestrian, motorsport, mountain biking and surfing.

The town has a vibrant coffee culture, numerous restaurants, and is close to some of the best winemaking country in the world. We have a provincially patriotic rugby culture that celebrates world-class achievements.

The nearest large city, New Zealand’s capital city Wellington, is approximately 1.5 hours’ drive away. Wellington provides a dose of big-city culture and is the departure point for vehicle ferries to the South Island.  Our largest city, Auckland, is an easy one-hour flight from Palmerston North. https://manawatunz.co.nz/live/work/working-in-manawatu/

The Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) is equipped with Eklin digital radiography (ceiling mounted gantries and portable machines for both companion animal & equine imaging), several high-quality ultrasound machines (e.g. Philips, Toshiba), Philips BigBore CT scanner (with dynamic focal spot & metal artifact reducing software) custom-built synchronised Equine CT table, and fluoroscopy.  MRI is available locally.

The VTH sustains a moderate but varied caseload that provides a continued challenge and growth in imaging.  The caseload, though demanding, is not overwhelming. The clinical faculty is small and there is excellent collegiality and collaboration with academic clinicians in allied disciplines.

As the successful candidate, you will be primarily involved with:

  • Teaching diagnostic imaging to veterinary and veterinary technology students, interns and residents.
  • Research, either as a part of an established team or through the development of your own research programme.
  • Contributing to the clinical diagnostic imaging service.

As the successful candidate, we require you to:

  • Hold a veterinary degree which can be registered with the Veterinary Council of New Zealand and you must either be eligible to register as a specialist in diagnostic imaging in New Zealand or be eligible to sit specialist examinations in diagnostic imaging.
  • Provide evidence of significant existing research/scholarly activity for those appointed as Associate Professor or above.
  • Have a PhD (or equivalent) which is desirable but not essential. In agreement with the Head of Institute, you may be able to study for a higher degree.

Enquiries of an academic nature may be directed to Jane Langton Burnell VTH Director

Massey University is committed to protecting the health, safety and well-being of our staff and students.  All students, staff and visitors need to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19, or medically exempt, in order to come onto our campuses or to take part in face-to-face University-managed activities from the 14th February 2022. As this position fits this criterion, it will require the successful applicant to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 or have a New Zealand Ministry of Health issued medical exemption. Evidence of your vaccination status will be requested before appointment.
