POSITION SUMMARY
The Assistant Director of Efficacy and Safety is responsible for ensuring that uses approved by the APVMA are effective, and that they are safe to the target (treated) animal, plant or crop. The Assistant Director of Efficacy and will undertake efficacy evaluations and assist other APVMA officers and external service providers undertaking assessments, and review their recommendations. They will also assist the Director in managing relationships with external service providers, internal and external clients, and stakeholders, including commonwealth, state and industry bodies and non-government organisations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
The assistant Director works with some guidance to:
• Provide timely technical advice on efficacy and target species safety (animal and crop) matters relating to the regulation of agricultural chemicals and veterinary medicines;
• Assist in developing technical capacity within the APVMA to build a greater understanding of efficacy and target safety risk assessments;
• Facilitate cooperation and partnerships with external service providers on efficacy and target safety assessments, while working with internal and external clients and stakeholders;
• Conduct specific assessments based on individual expertise, provide advice regarding assessments, provide advice regarding suitable external service providers for assessments, and provide quality oversight of reports considering APVMA principles of regulatory science quality and relevant international best practices;
• Assist in ensuring that guidelines and guidance documents relating to efficacy and target safety are contemporary and reflect international best practice; and
• Prepare written material incorporating scientific/technical considerations into briefs to decision makers, ministerial correspondence and other corporate documents as required.
SELECTION CRITERIA
To be considered for this role you will need to be a resilient and confident scientist with;
Essential:
• Demonstrated experience and analytical skills in efficacy and target species safety assessment, preferably in the context of a regulatory environment, with the ability to apply these skills across different product types;
• A highly developed ability to solve problems, show judgement, pay attention to detail and make decisions based on sound science and risk analysis;
• Knowledge of the regulatory and legislative environment of the APVMA. Familiarity with international best practices related to preparing high quality risk assessments for efficacy and target species safety of agricultural and veterinary chemicals;
• PhD qualification in a related scientific discipline, such as agricultural or veterinary science; and
• Willingness to abide by the APS Values, Code of Conduct and Employment Principles, and a demonstrated commitment to applying the principles and practices of WHS, equity and diversity in the workplace.
Desirable:
• Additional Tertiary qualifications in a related scientific discipline, such as agricultural or veterinary science.
• Demonstrated experience in efficacy and host safety assessment highly desirable.
